His last exhibit, “The Chupacabra Chronicles,” was so popular that it appeared on ABC News and even now, more than a year later, he still receives letters from fans as far off as England.
Gómez labels his art Social Abstract Surrealism, and said his pieces often have a hidden message for the audience.
“What I like to do is be part of the big picture,” he said. “A lot of the issues that use to be typical of this part of the world are now global.”
Often, Gómez’s pieces show icons and objects such as eggs, peppers, and coral snakes. However, within his illustrations are messages that often dealing with acceptance and tolerance toward Hispanics.
Lefler teaches design and art education classes at the school. This will be his second Brownsville exhibit and he will show some of his recent work including two of his oil and canvas paintings, “Southmost” and “Highlights.”
The exhibit, which is located in the university’s Richardson Art Gallery, will run through March 8. For more information, call the UTB/TSC Fine Arts Department at (956) 882-8247.
